Sex reassignment surgery, also known as sex change or gender reassignment surgery, is a procedure that changes genital organs from one gender to another. HOW DOES SEX REASSIGNMENT SURGERY PERFORM?
Sex reassignment techniques can be performed by converting male to female anatomy requires removal of the penis, reshaping genital tissue to appear more female, and constructing a vagina. A vagina can be successfully formed from a skin graft or an isolated loop of intestine.
WHO ARE THE GOOD CANDIDATES?
If you consider having sex change surgery, you must meet the following criteria.
1. Live for at least one year full-time in the new gender role (called Real Life Training or RLT)
2. Engage in hormone therapy for at least one year (which can be simultaneous with the full-time experience)
3. Gain the recommendation of a psychologist or therapist after an appropriate series of sessions.
4. Gain a recommendation of a psychiatrist that surgery is not contrary to the mental health of the patient.
Prospective candidates for gender reassignment surgery must work with a mental health professional for diagnosis. The mental health professional additionally provides counsel about treatment options and implications as well as therapy and education for the individual, his or her family and employers.
