Liposuction VS Tummy Tuck

When it comes to minimizing the flabby tyre around your waist, what is the best option?

If you are suffering from stubborn tummy bulges or those chunky pouches at your hips, liposuction and tummy tuck treatments are available to save you. However, both methods have pros and cons that you should consider before deciding on one.

Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to make the abdomen firmer. The tummy tuck involves the removal of a large amount of skin from the lower abdomen. If you have stretch marks, your skin lacks laxity, or if your tummy has a fatty or “jelly-like” appearance of the abdominal skin, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty would be a better choice.

Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by removing excess fat from deposits. For most patients, liposuction alone is sufficient to correct the problem. If you have a “fat pocket” in the lower abdomen, thighs, buttocks, upper arms or even under the chin that simply won’t reduce no matter how hard you workout (abdominal fat can be very resistant to diet and exercise.), you should consider liposuction. The results of liposuction give a more harmonious appearance of the whole abdomen. However, because of skin shrinkage which occurs following liposuction, excess skin might be an issue.

There is also growing evidence that liposuction is safer than a tummy tuck, since it is a much less invasive procedure. The incision in a tummy tuck usually extends from one hip to the other, and thus can often be almost 2 feet long. In contrast, liposuction surgery involves only a few very tiny incisions which become hardly noticeable, and no displacement of the belly button. Recovery after liposuction, particularly tumescent liposuction, is easier than after a tummy tuck as well.

Both methods entail possible risks as well. Liposuction can cause asymmetry, rippling, skin injury or pigmentation changes while a tummy tuck can cause noticeable scarring, skin loss or need for second operation.

As both tummy tuck and liposuction are surgical procedures, you must be absolutely sure of your needs before you decide on one or the other. Consult with a qualified cosmetic surgeon to talk about what you need, what risks you are at, what to expect and what advice he or she would give.
